In substance it's the tragically adventurous story of Elly and his brother, from the childhood to the mature age. A Jewish neighbor, a lesbian aunt in love with her sister-in-law, an old but lively gentleman, a gay brother, a complexed and paranoic father, and, hear hear, this is only a quarter of t...

I am not very good at writing reviews. It's basicaly because for me there is no use in description of the main character or story, but I think that the most important thing is expressing our feels. And this is exactly what I am going to do. But before I start, there is one last thing I'd like to wri...

There is a big void between the front cover and the back cover. I shall review this book properly later on. At least it will provide for some interesting bile during my book group meeting!

Bought this on a whim today because of a) the cover, b) the synopsis, and c) it was on sale. It looks intriguing, and I can't wait to read it. It's on the "to-read" shelf!

Sarah Winman is a voice to watch. This was a very good tale of things/people/experiences lost & found. It was an ambitious first novel and while mostly successful I found the main framing device, a before and after situation that Elly, the voice of the story, tells you will happen from the first lin...

Billed as a story of the relationship between Elly and her older brother Joe, this book follows the two siblings from 1960s England to the events of 9/11. The first half, set in the late 70s, deals primarily with Elly's friendship with the quirky Jenny Penny and her response to her parents' decision...
even with nougat, you can have a perfect moment
More or less exactly what I expected. Reasonably light (in terms of prose), a quick read. It's definitely a solid three stars: the characters are likeable, and Winman fleshes them out well. If the narrative hadn't been so jumpy and incomprehensible in places, I would probably have given this four ...
