Some people have all the luck—the bad luck. And in this book, they find each other. The writing is so good and the characters so engaging, it didn’t matter in the long run that I occasionally wondered if that many bad things could really happen to people in close proximity with each other. Oddly eno...
The first few Atkinson books I read I was kind of "meh" about. I didn't really love them, but I liked her writing enough to keep trying. Then she published the first two Jackson Brodie books and I enjoyed them enormously. And then, although I kept adding all her new books to my TBR list, somehow non...
76. WHEN WILL THERE BE GOOD NEWS?, BY KATE ATKINSON (Book 3 of Jackson Brodie)The third one on the Jackson Brodie series, and the last one I’ll be reading this year, to my great unhappiness. I didn’t expect to like this book so much; I liked the first two on this series, but not passionately. This o...
This is the novel in the Jackson Brodie series that I read first. It didn’t hurt to do that except I would have enjoyed it much more if I’d read it third. In this novel a little girl named Joanna is walking in the country with her mother, sister and baby brother. A strange encounter turns her life i...
What a terrific pleasure to renew my acquaintanceship with Jackson Brodie! Another deeply entertaining mystery by Kate Atkinson, with the usual mix of unusual characters whose intertwined lives come to a satisfyingly surprising and even startling resolution at the end. Again, a wonderful compilati...
By some celestial alignment and confluence of book lists, I read two Kate Atkinson books in a row - Behind the Scenes at the Museum, which I've already reviewed and very much enjoyed, and this one. I don't like this one nearly as much. While there are still the turns of phrase I liked, and her chara...
Here are three reasons not to read my review of this book: 1. I didn't finish it, 2. it's the third book in a trilogy and I didn't read the first or second books, and 3. I don't like thrillers in which a deranged killer is stalking the book's characters. So. This was a good book! The characters we...
When Will There Be Good News? is my second Jackson Brodie novel, the first being Case Histories, which I read last year. I still haven’t made it to One Good Turn, but now I have to, to fill in the Jackson-Brodie-backstory. Not that I had much time to wonder about it, as this one grabs you right from...
Really cleverly plotted and organized. I loved how all the disparate threads gradually came together. While the pacing was skillful, I gave it 4 stars because the ending was disappointing--anti-climactic. Not even the little juicy disclosure at the end could salvage the ending.
