Even though this collection is missing one of my favorite stories of Raymond Carver ("Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?"), I still consider this the definitive Raymond Carver collection. Some of his greatest stories are included here. It was almost like discovering Carver for the first time again....
I read these stories slowly over the course of the summer, a couple at a time, so as to give each one its due and so as not to make my heart break.
Like the Alice Munro stories, this is another book I've read I don't know how many times, but one Flaky Genius and I are reading as part of her master's classes. Carver is always unsettling, always interesting. A bit of a downer to read, though, Carver's stories are almost across the board about bro...
I seem to be one of the few people who managed to read this before seeing the Altman film Short Cuts, which is based on nine of the stories. I also like Short Cuts more than most of my friends. Possibly there's some connection.
