Though the pace is good, it took me awhile to be really sucked into the book. There's a lot of foreshadowing in the beginning, but it pays off. I felt the characters were well-developed, unique, and interesting. By the ending I did find myself wanting to read the next book in the series.

Spoiler Rating: High Best of Lizzys, Oh, lord. This book. It starts off so promising, but it never succeeds in becoming more than a shallow, fluffy story intended to reassure the children who read it that (a) actions don't have consequences, (b) all problems can be instantly and completely fix...

Very similar to Tamora Pierce's other work. An update on the world of Alanna (Lionness series) with the introduction of an addition sort of magic.

Like that series, The Immortals is set in Pierce's imaginary and magical land of Tortall, although this is focused on ...

As usual, Pierce's work is so good that no matter that I'm older than the intended audience, I love these books. Can't put them down, in fact! This is a good first book in the series. :)
