The police never suspect that a serial killer might be at large until they discover the fourth body—the first white victim—draped across a tomb in a London graveyard. Now, accusations of racism are rampant and Scotland Yard is on the defensive, scrambling to apprehend a maniac while trying to avoid a potential public relations disaster. Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley and his disgraced partner Barbara Havers have been assigned to the investigation, and Winston Nkata has been hastily—though deservedly—promoted and made the station's spokesperson to the media. But with Lynley distracted by concerns for his pregnant wife, Havers fighting for her professional future, and Nkata confronting a hostile public, no one has begun to imagine the tenacity and ingenuity of the killer they are seeking . . . and no one is prepared for the savage, shocking instant when everything will change forever.

A big part of what I enjoy about murder mystery series is that we get to know the primary characters over time, and see them develop. So to mess aro...
