Xiaoming Wang (1957-) was born and grew up in Beijing, China, and acquired his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas in 1990, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. For almost thirty years he has been studying the extinct fossil dogs, the family Canidae (including ancestral wolves, coyotes, foxes, etc), as well as other members of Carnivora. Another of his interest is centered around the chronology and stratigraphy of Asian mammals. As a curator of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, he has led several expeditions in remote areas in Tibetan Plateau, Mongolia, Mexico, and California. These trips have led to the discovery of many new species of mammals previous unknown to science.
