I read this right after [b:The Dark Lord of Derkholm|47587|The Dark Lord of Derkholm (Derkholm, #1)|Diana Wynne Jones|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1355961884s/47587.jpg|869986] which is the first in the series and I liked it a whole lot better. But here's the thing: I think I mostly l...

This spoof of fantasy tropes defies every genre convention and turns the familiar story of a magic school (Harry Potter, anyone?) upside down. Laughter is a gift of this tale, where every dangerous situation has its farcical silver lining. The action takes place in a magic university, where six first...

Jones had a great time going to college, if this book is anything to judge by. (Of course, she got to hear lectures by C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, so I can't help thinking it must have been heaven). So, this is a book about a group of undergraduates who meet and form friendships and romance ri...

I found this book to be extraordinarily formulaic and trite.

Being a big fan of Diana Wynne Jones, I was disappointed in this book. It reads more like a rush job and sadly didn't hold up to its predecessor, Dark Lord of Derkholm. There doesn't seem to ever be a direct plot and I never feel close to any of the characters. I could also do without all of the pair...

A lovely book and a comforting, reliable re-read about a group of young adults who meet and bond at a college for wizards. Unfortunately, their instructors are not the most reliable or educational, and much of their adventures come from them taking matters in their own hands. Most of the students we...

DWJ Book Toast, #13Diana Wynne Jones is one of my favorite fantasy authors, growing up and now, and I was saddened by the news of her death. I can't say I'm overcome with emotion - as personal as some of her work is to me, its not like I knew her after all - but I wish I could put into words how I f...

This book reminds me forcefully of Harry Potter, and I suspect it will appeal to the same people: although it is in some sense a sequel to Dark Lord of Derkholm (set in the same world eight years later, with some of the same characters), it is quite different in its focus on a group of students atte...

In lots of ways I think this isn't as good as Dark Lord of Derkholm, but it's so charming I just don't care.
