It would be five stars if the Flora novels weren't so good. Same universe, some of the same characters. I love the framing : these are fragments being discussed by a future historian, there are sources cited, and judgment of the veracity of the stories. Library copy

Watching Flora in adulthood is fascinating: it feels a bit like watching a child grow up. Flora Segunda was inventive and fun and a bit like watching Hermione get the lead role. I particularly enjoyed the world -building, but also the way each book 's focus shifts as Flora grows up. Vague discomf...

DNF. the book bored me. I started to pick it up again and the dread at having to slog thorough it decided me. plot twists are one thing, this book is poorly written whiplash. I like Flora as a character, really wish she was in a better book.

A confusing start to what I assume will be a confusing book. Probably a side order to the previous books from this author, but the writing nor the stories made me care for any of it.

This collection of Steampunk stories mostly avoid Victorian England and range from the Roman Empire to the future. They are generally quite good, though not all of course. I especially enjoyed Dylan Horrock's Steam Girl and Cory Doctorow's Clockwork Fagin.

Before I get to my review, I want to offer a friendly public service message to those who are fortunate enough to be reading and voting on the various genre awards. Go ahead and pencil in Fearsome Journeys as this year's winner for best anthology, and Jonathan Strahan as winner for best editor. That...

Cross-posted on ReaderlingA cromulent collection of short stories, though uneven like most (maybe all) multi-author collections. I do appreciate the emphasis by editor Kelly Link. Seven deadly sins in comic form with perplexing steampunk ornament and terrible lettering. At least it's short. "Hand in...
