I have been teaching and practicing acupuncture over the course of twenty-five years, including eight years in China. However, I had never fully understood acupuncture until I studied 《Ling Shu》.I liked my work. But year after year, deep within my heart, I felt more frustration than enjoyment.I have treated tens of thousands of patients over the years, using many different acupuncture methods such as head acupuncture; ear acupuncture; laser acupuncture; electric acupuncture, and much more. I have tried many so-called magic points from well-known acupuncturists of past and present; yet I questioned whether my practice of acupuncture was improving. In fact, I was never sure which methods or points would be successful with my patient every time I prescribed a treatment. I did not have any principles that could guide me in selecting points and acupuncture techniques.I also felt lost, for no matter whether the patient reported good results or no change. I never had a consistent method with which to evaluate my treatment. It seemed that the whole of my practice relied on whatever the patients said they felt. Not even after years of practice was there more confidence or experience. As an acupuncture professor, I often face questions from students such as, "Do we use the theory of Yin/Yang balance in acupuncture practice?" "Do we use the theory of Meridians in diagnosis and differentiation?" "How can we remember all the indications of acupuncture points?" "Do we use all these points in the clinic?" "Do we apply the reinforcing and reducing technique in treatment?" "Do we apply different techniques in different kinds of diseases?" "All in all, how much of the theory of TCM really applies in acupuncture practice?"In reality, though numerous TCM courses are given in school, only a fraction of that which is taught is used in the clinical setting. Obviously, there is a big gap between what is taught and what is practiced. If acupuncture is real medicine like other medical therapies, all of the above stated questions or problems do not make sense. Something must be wrong.Beginning from 1997, motivated by these questions, I started my own research. Instead of learning new acupuncture techniques or special points like before, I studied all the classical acupuncture books written in different generations, one by one in reverse chronological order, trying to discover the real practice of acupuncture of ancient times.I walked into a massive and messy history of acupuncture spread over a span of two thousand years. Struggling with disappointment and exhaustion, I had a very difficult time doing my research. When I opened the earliest classic book of acupuncture, 《Ling Shu》, or otherwise known as 《Miraculous Pivot》, it immediately attracted me. Even though there were difficulties in understanding the classic language and the discrepancies between different editions, still, the questions in my practice and teaching finally started to be answered.I couldn't stop reading it over and over. Eventually the answers to my questions in practice and teaching became clear and simple. At first I couldn't believe it. Is it possible that we have mistaken almost every step in acupuncture practice? A way of practice and teaching that has been conducted for over two thousand years?I was deeply bothered by these questions. But I did not stop there. I believed that if the theory from 《Ling Shu》 was correct, it could be proven clinically. So, I started to treat patients by applying the theory of 《Ling Shu》 in clinical practice, case by case. The clinical results were not only consistently positive but also beyond belief. Almost every case became a surprise to me, and every case confirmed the correctness of the theory. Each case brought me closer to the highest level of acupuncture as stated in 《Ling Shu》.My doubt is gone. My heart is filled with joy and excitement. Now I can say that acupuncture is one of the best medical therapies if you really understand 《Ling Shu》.This book, 《Ling Shu Acupuncture》, is the quintessence of my study and research of 《Ling Shu》 from past years. Whether you are an acupuncturist or a student, 《Ling Shu Acupuncture》will not only help you reevaluate and truly understand the essence of acupuncture, but it will also help you get into the practice of 《Ling Shu》.To know more infromation of the book, please visit my website at:www.lingshuacupuncture.com
