There is a difference between intelligent writing and trying desperately to sound intelligent. This was the latter, and Whitehead's insistence on over-metaphorizing EVERYTHING made it pretty unreadable.

I get why all the critics think this is an excellent book. The writing is poetic. But... I didn't enjoy it all that much. In this book humanity ends not with a bang but a whimper. I guess I need more action in my zombie books!
