Derek Johnson is Assistant Professor of Media and Cultural Studies in the Department of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. His research examines how creative identities are imagined and negotiated in the media industries. In 2013, he published his first book, Media Franchising: Creative License and Collaboration in the Culture Industries, as well as the collected volume A Companion to Media Authorship (co-edited with Jonathan Gray). Outside of book publishing, his work has appeared in scholarly journals including Cinema Journal, Popular Communication, The Velvet Light Trap, New Review of Film & Television Studies, and Media, Culture & Society. He has also published chapters in collected editions including Convergence Media History (ed. Janet Staiger and Sabine Hake), Fandom (ed.
