You feel social anxiety nearly everywhere you go. Your palms get clammy. Your chest gets tight. You feel panicky inside. You can’t think of the right words to say. You feel your cheeks flush with color. You feel as if all the eyes in the room are on you. You try to swallow down the lump in your throat. You hate feeling this way, but you cannot remember a time when you weren’t anxious around other people.
It started when you were a young child. You cowered between your mother’s legs, afraid to join the other children on the playground. Watching other kids play, but always having an inability to play with them. You carried your painful shyness from your childhood, through adolescence and puberty, into adulthood. The anxiety always there, ever nagging you and holding you back from seeking your full potential.
As an adult, you seek to make choices and schedule your life with the ever-present goal of limiting contact with other people because it causes you crushing anxiety. It is a way to cope, but it is not an ideal way for you to overcome your fear or to overcome your social anxiety. You miss a promotion at work or can’t attend a concert because of your anxiety. It painfully limits you in nearly every aspect of your life.
I can personally relate to your severe social anxiety. I was painfully shy my entire childhood, raised by two very socially inept teenaged parents. I always stood back from the group, terrified to talk to anyone. When others asked me to join them, my heart and mind started racing. I experienced serious panic attacks in front of other children, and later, in front of managers at my job. I had multiple situations in high school where I was seriously embarrassed and others were laughing at me, causing my social anxiety to reach new heights. I began getting beat up and bullied from grade school to high school due to my shyness.
Eventually, I was able to tackle my social anxiety as an adult by taking the steps below very slowly. I practiced each step in a variety of settings with a variety of people. I continued to push myself through every interaction with other people until I largely overcame my social anxiety. Once a teenager who failed speech class due to my inability to speak in front of others, I suddenly found myself speaking in front of rooms full of doctors and healthcare professionals in my career.
I moved on to becoming a successful trainer and mentor at large hospital systems. Other people were in awe of my ability to easily speak in front of others, training them on a variety of topics. I suddenly found myself surrounded by friends and coworkers who enjoyed my company! People started telling me that I was the ‘life of the party’! I suddenly started to get promotions and raises! I was flabbergasted!
Once too painfully shy to even date or befriend anyone else, I also finally found the courage inside of me to ask a handsome colleague to go to the amusement park with me after work. I am happy to report that we are now married with three children! I wore many hats inside and outside the corporate world since learning my social skills, including Team Leader, Assistant Soccer Coach, and Girl Scout Troop Leader! Currently, I am a 6x Best-Selling author who touches the lives of my readers everyday via my ebooks, audiobooks and blog!
As you can see, my story really has a successful and happy ending! I overcame my social anxiety, and I am convinced that you can overcome your social anxiety as well! Don’t let your past or your parents hold you back. Don’t let your symptoms hold you back. We can sometimes be our own worst enemy, but I will give you tips on how to help step through your social anxiety and learn the skills that you need to move forward and be successful.
