Historically, Jodhpur was built as a new capital for the state of Marwar (in the year 1459 AD). The ruins of the previous capital (Mandore) can be seen in the Mandore Gardens, just outside the city of Jodhpur.

Jodhpur, also goes by the name of the Blue city, for the colour of houses in the old city area.
