When Euro-American painters visited Taos, New Mexico, in the early decades of the twentieth century, they encountered a region abounding with artistic possibility. The serene landscape, with its crystalline southwestern light, offered new sources of inspiration. As members of the Taos Society of Artists, the painters characterized the cultural and artistic transformations of the Southwest; some created romantic visions of a mythical past, while others explored the contemporary lives of the regions indigenous and Hispanic populations.
