Loved this book!! Love the humor, the history & the friendship. I cannot believe I put this book off for so long! Fabulous book! My first 5* of the year.
This is one of those books that I will not lend, for fear of not getting it back. It's a charming record of the correspondence between a rampant NY bibliophile and her English supplier. A touching love story that existed solely through their letters. Funning and poignant. One of my all time favo...
"If you happen to pass by 84 Charing Cross Road, kiss it for me? I owe it so much."This was my second reading of the book, and I'm adding a star to my original rating. I laughed a lot harder this time, and even got a little choked up near the end. I don't recall this much chortling, cackling, guf...
NO SPOILERS!!!My edition of this book included two of Helene Hanff's writings – both 84 Charing Cross Road and also The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, which did not at all appeal to me as much as the former did. I am only reviewing 84 Charing Cross Road, and the stars awarded relate only to the forme...
Lovely short book containing a compilation of letters between Helene Hanff, a writer living in New York, and Frank Doel, an antique book seller in London. Her feisty style of writing met with his firstly prim correspondents made it a lovely read indeed. Savour it slowly and let it amuses you.
This edition contains both 84 Charing Cross Road and The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, and I'm glad, because I don't think either would have been complete without the other.I had this book recommended to me because I loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and I can definitely see ho...
Sweet. Charming. Readable-in-an-hour. Nothing too dramatic, but if you have a love of books, and I mean books for cherishing, as in Works of Art, then you'll love the nostalgia of these letters.
I was visiting a friend and she mentioned this book. Then she paused and said, “You have read that, haven’t you?” I hadn’t, so she shoved it into my hands. The story of a great relationship, based around books and told entirely through letters. Next up: the sequel. [May 2010]
