I started reading this book after I was recommended by Goodreads. This was my first Ellis Peters mystery featuring Brother Cadfael. And, I can happily say that this won't be my last. This book can classify as a Cozy-mystery. The crime is very simple. The amount of blood and gore is almost non-existe...

Great mystery novel! Perfect for those new to the genre as it has all the elements that make not only a good detective story but also an overall great book. The author manages to introduce the reader to the medieval period and welsh culture with ease and familiarity, sharing with us her passion for ...

I adore the Cadfael TV series with Derek Jacobi, but I'd never read any of the books. It was wonderful to read this one and see just how faithful the show is to the lovable (and sometimes despicable), larger-than-life characters in the book. As always the mystery had me scratching my head up until...

This is a stylish, elegant mystery set in Medieval England with a lead character who has depths, intelligence and a charm that seduces probably the most picky reader. Marvelous story. You have to read it to find out exactly what happens. A fun spoof on religion. The historical detail, the characters, and the humor are enchanting. By the end I loved Brother Cadfael and all the villagers of Gwytherin, Wales. An utterly charming tale and funny too!

In a number of visions, a young monk of the Benedictine abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury believes he has encounters with St. Winifred, in her earthly life a girl from a remote Welsh village decapitated by an evil-spirited nobleman. The saint, Brother Columbanus claims, tells him she...

I like a good mystery/detective novel - even better if it's also a historical novel like this one. Interesting main character and strong plot. I'm interested in reading more Brother Cadfael mysteries.

You would think with my background -- a bachelor's and a master's in History with a concentration on Medieval Europe -- that Brother Cadfael would be a natural fit. Unfortunately, Ellis Peters was not the author to bring that era alive for me.I far prefer Derek Jacobi's portrayal of the erstwhile cr...
