First, the star rating for this story is a little difficult. I'd put it at 3.5 stars. If you've already read some of the other reviews out there, you probably know one of my critiques of the story - the jump between part one and part two. Not that I minded it all that much, but it was just SO differ...

I wanted to give this a full 5 stars, but I just couldn't. Still, for my first venture into Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books/stories, I was happy with what I found. The thing that turned me off was that after the first part of the book is done and the second begins, I was very confused at what I was ...

I'm not sure why I enjoyed this quite as much as I did. It's the first Sherlock Holmes story. A man is found murdered in an abandoned house with a lurid call for revenge written in blood above him. Sherlock and Watson are, unsurprisingly, On the Case.On the face of it, it has all the markings of a t...

I naturally gravitated to London, that great cesspool into which all the loungers and idlers of the Empire are irresistibly drained. With these words the young Dr. John Watson describes his new home after returning broken by injury and illness from the Empire's colonial wars in Afghanistan. Sir Ar...

I've been a Sherlock Holmes fan--of the actual fiction by Conan Doyle--ever since the short story "The Speckled Band" was assigned to me in high school. I own an edition of the complete tales and novels. A Study in Scarlet is the first work with Holmes and tells when Watson, his roommate, companion ...

I have been on a Sherlock Holmes spree for the past couple of weeks. I have watched probably 10 movies and am in the process of reading every story that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ever wrote about Holmes. While Holmes (almost) always solves his case, the stories never seem to grow monotonous. Sir Art...

I'm not the one to read the crime books but I wanted to read the main source after watching and loving the British series Sherlock. And the book didn't disappoint me, it is short but I like the flow of writing and character descriptions. I will definitely read more Doyle :)

See my review of this book, and many more, at Tales from the Great East Road. After serving his country in the Afghanistan war, Dr John Watson returns to his beloved London looking for a home. Permanently injured during his service and with little money, John soon realises he’ll need a roommate. By ...

What can you say about A Study in Scarlet that hasn't already been said? The debut of Sherlock Holmes, one of the few popular characters that people all over the planet can identify at a glance (much like Superman, Mickey Mouse and Tarzan). I've read them all many times and decided it was time to r...
