I really thought that A Tale Dark and Grimm was a beautifully written book. It was creative, it was well constructed, and I loved following Hansel and Gretel through the darkness in which they were forged. There was so much symbolism, so many themes and messages going on in this book, and the explor...

**Review originally posted on www.BunnyCates.com**I will say upfront – I loved this book. There, end of review.HAHA, I’m just kidding. I did love it though. I had borrowed a copy from a friend and then was sad I had to give it back before I could get to it. Luckily, I ended up reading it as my f...

Sometimes you come across a book that makes you smack your forehead and go "Why didn't I think of this idea?!". Suffice it to say, for me, this is one such book. Now, everybody here has read the Grimm Fairy Tales, yes? Snow-white, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, etc? Ring any bells? While we read the...

I loved, loved, loved this book! This is the kind of book that I wish I could find more of. I think it was a wonderful fix of humor, horror, suspense, angst, and a great coming of age story. I didn't think that I would appreciate a story with Hansel and Gretel thrown into other fairy tales, nor c...

A retelling of eight of Grimm's fairy tales, inserting Hansel and Gretel into each of the stories. Grim indeed, Gidwitz doesn't sugar coat anything, and there's plenty of blood and guts to engage most ten year old boys. The narrator is a snarky fellow, adding a light touch in the midst of the gore.

I’m always in favor of fairy tale re-tellings, or re-workings. This one did something interesting by tying together a number of different Grimm stories by using Hansel and Gretel in all of them. I didn’t mind the direct address of the narrator, but again (I feel like I’m saying this a lot this month...

3.5 starsA thoroughly enjoyable and even slightly fantastic fairytale reimagining that has all the macabre and bloodthirsty bits that were such an integral facet of the original folk tales collected by the Grimm Brothers, but with humor in the asides and interruptions added by the author as he weave...

Overall: This book was very well paced and ended up being a quick read. I enjoyed how the author took several Grimm stories and mashed them together with Hansel and Gretel to make a disturbing, bloody, yet enjoyable read. I was unfamiliar with all the stories used, but the original Hansel and Gretel...

It's a great book. Gidwitz took what was coolest about the Grimm tales (the gore, the impossibility) and managed to make a compelling, cohesive novel out of it. Perhaps more remarkably, he managed to create two realistic people out of the characters of Hansel and Gretel, children who actually grow...
