This was one of the best books that I've read all year. We have Nao who lives in Japan and who has decided that before she dies, she wants to write about her 104 year old great grandmother in her diary. We have Ruth who lives in Canada and when she is walking along the beach one day, she finds a H...
I picked up this book, not because I'm super into the Japanese culture but, because it was recommended to me by a friend. I was told I would enjoy this because it has a stream of consciousness feel. Being a fan of Faulkner, Stein, and Morrison, I was all game. I also noticed the ratings on goodreads...
This book is like pistachio ice-cream for me: the fist half is very pleasant, but the aftertaste, the second half of that specific portion which I'm eating is..disagreeable. Ruth's part is the second half.First of all let's start from the chocolate chips on the biscuit: prettier things like Nao's pa...
I'm meeting with my book club today in Belfast to discuss this book....obviously! It's an alternative book club that I started last year to read anything a bit different i.e sci-fi, fantasy, horror etc. All the book clubs I could find near me were only reading contemporary styled literature and I wa...
I loved this book and I want to thank Rachel for loaning me her signed copy because I had a snow, ice and coffee accident as I was carrying this to work one morning and now it's not as pretty as it was when she loaned it to me! :( Buy this title at Powells Books.

A strange item catches Ruth attention, as she's walking along the beach of her island home in Desolation Sound, off the west coast of Canada, in the British Columbia(has to be Cortes Island, based on the author's description of ferries etc). When she picks up the item, it turns out to be a plastic ...
This book started off brilliantly. The dual narration was beautifully done, the characters both in the past and present were interesting, both living in worlds that were strange to everything they loved and wanted. The symbiosis between Ruth and Nao grows at the right pace, just in time for you to b...
Probably 3.5 or 3.75 if I could be more specific, but I really liked this. The voice of Nao is very well done. I also enjoyed the ruminations on the strange nature of time.
Ozeki's novel is a tough one to rate; really, I'd agree with several other reviewers and give Nao's story a 4 and Ruth/Oliver a 2. It's partly brilliant and magnificently ambitious, but it could have used a good bit of editing and focus - it's all over the map.
