"AFTER WAR" carries on from Ludwig Renn's earlier novel, 'War', in which the main character, a German soldier, has survived the First World War and now is trying to make it through a chaotic peace that prevails over Germany in the immediate postwar era as the forces of the extreme left and right vie for power.
"AFTER WAR" is loosely based on Renn's own postwar experiences as a captain with the Dresden security police, a paramilitary force set up during the Weimar Republic.
