Read my full review at The Book Bee1.5 starsAt times I questioned why I continued to read this book. Poorly developed plot, no world-building, and a seriously bratty main character has turned me off. In reading up on the other books in the series, I am very confident in my choice to abandon the Song...

This was my introduction to Pierce, as an adult--but I still found it a compelling read despite being well over the age of the targeted market. It doesn't quite make it up there as a favorite book--she has lots of competition in heroic fantasy, including her own. I do think Pierce is one of those au...

Tamora Pierce will always have a reader in me. No matter what she writes she will always be on my Auto buy list. Alanna The First Adventure is the story that started it all and won my heart. The thing that I really love about this book and the series as a whole, is that you get to grow right alongsi...

Alanna becomes Alan in order to become a page and eventually a knight. Hiding her gender is difficult but not impossibe and there are hints that there is attention from the goddess on her future. An interesting beginning with lots of possibilities to the future to the series

Some of this is a little cheesy, but then you remember that it's pretty old, and it's part of the charm. I've been subconsciously modeling my fantasy heroines on Alanna and only upon rereading did I notice how she shows up in so much of my work. (Imitation. It's the sincerest form of flattery.)

Without a doubt, I'd have fallen in love with this book as a younger child. Now, as an older teen, however, I have to admit that while Pierce's introduction to this quartet is satisfying, it isn't exceptional. Alanna is a bright and engaging heroine, well developed and courageous; someone who is eas...
