Returning to Arriland and the Woodcutter family was a lot of fun. Saturday is a great character - wishing she could be the her, and never wanting to be the princess. Convinced that she is the abnormally normal sister of the bunch, she has decided to find her way as a hired sword. But things never wo...
Alethea Kontis has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Amongst a glut of fairy tale retellings, her books immediately stood out for me for both the author's keen knowledge of fairy tales, and the witty way she incorporates even the most obscure into her novels. They have often have a light to...
Hero is the second book in the Woodcutter Sisters series, and where the first followed Sunday, this one followed Saturday (and as the next book stars Friday, so I guess we're going backward along the days of the week?) who's off on her heroic journey. And like the first book, I liked it okay, but ...
I read this a few months ago, actually, so this review's late. But now I'm reading the sequel, and I happen to have some free time, so I'm finally getting around to it. :) I really like this book. It's mostly based off of the frog prince fairytale, but it's got a lot of other fairytales mixed in, ...
As this book began, I thought I would adore it. I really liked the tone, which was whimsical while still paying proper deference to the many fairy tale tropes woven throughout the story. This is definitely the most mashed-up fairy tale mash-up I've ever read, and while I thought that would make it d...
this was my least favorite. everything was too easy, too set. enjoyable, but not great. So I keep coming back to this book and why it doesn't work. The major problem is that there's no real tension. We already know the ocean is going away because Saturday's story was told first, and she removes the o...
The more Kontis writes in this world, the more involved and complicated her worldbuiding becomes. This one definitely had fairy tale elements, and some of the pieces were pulled right from fairy tales, but the over arching story was most definitely not. I am really, really enjoying these novels.
I received this book from the editor in exchange for an honest review I'm going to start by saying WOW. Not since Brothers' Grimm have I been so entranced with a collection of short stories. What made this anthology fantastic was the imagination and creativity that went into each individual story....

She is rescued by a squire and brought back to her kingdom to find that she was not the only one affected by the sudden appearance of an ocean. Now that her home is filled with refugees, Frida...
