I'm not sure how to feel upon finishing this book. It was well written, and I feel like the subject matter should definitely make me feel a little skeevy but I actually don't. I was able to be objective and take it for the work of fiction that it is. That's not saying that it's the book for everyone...

Steve Lowe's perfect review says it all "This is an odd one to rate and review. Was it well-written? Oh, yeah. Almost... too well-written. Felt a couple times like the plot was a bit too overtly manipulated to steer the story toward a particular conclusion, but maybe I'm just being picky. Was it ...

There is a misnomer on the cover of this book. Some short stories in this volume have not been commissioned for the book. Several of them have appeared in various magazines and collections (some have appeared over a decade ago). This is okay, for this is the first time that they are all collected t...

Youth can't be maintained forever. This theme has been done often enough in fiction, referring to the lead character. Alissa Nutting's Tampa subverts this by introducing a narrator who tries to maintain her lovers' youth. Celeste Price is a twenty-six-year-old teacher of high school English. Her pre...

I tried to think of a catchy title for this post, but that fish kept staring me in the eye, and daring me to come up with something better than the author. So yes, this time, the fish won. I almost want to say that this book defies explanation, but I think the praise I mean there might be misconstru...

Two words: disturbing and uncomfortable. Identifying with a protagonist is not necessary when the reading is so compelling. Reading this, I immediately wanted out of Celeste’s head. But, again, her is a compelling voice. It’s in how she views others, herself in particular that left me in need of som...

I am of the opinion that any book that makes you think is a good book. Well half of a good book because if it makes you think of throwing yourself in front of a speeding vehicle well that's just different. The last book I read before picking this up was a coming of age story told from a 14-year ol...

Believe me, I can easily understand all the negative reactions to this book but I can't help but find it absolutely fascinating. In fact, since putting the book down, I've given myself a while to think about it and, the more I do, the more I find myself acknowledging how clever and brilliant it is. A...

Rating: 2.5 StarsTAMPA isn't the type of novel you can necessarily enjoy reading, but there is no denying that it accomplishes what it sets out to do - reveal the mindset of a female sex offender and pedophile. It's uncomfortable to read and more than a little creepy on many occasions, but I found i...
