Andrew started his love of animals growing up in a small northern Michigan town 'under the constant influence' of cats, horses, and a pair of dogs. Generally interested in science and veterinary medicine, it was not until after high school when Andrew ventured to Wolf Park in Battle Ground Indiana that he developed a fond appreciation for ethology, the study of animal behavior, while working with the park's gray wolves, coyotes, red fox, and bison. He turned his degree program at nearby Purdue University toward wildlife science and focused in animal behavior. Over the course of his time at Wolf Park, Andrew performed public lecture and education outreach programs, curated exhibits and cared for the park's many animals, raised, socialized, and trained a pair of coyotes, and gained unique insight into the world of captive animal management and exotic canine behavior. It was also while at the park that Andrew met Jessica Addams, whom Andrew has published alongside of (and hopes to do again in the future). Together, after numerous collaborations on Wolf Park publications (including the production of a husbandry manual for captive red fox management) and after much discussion about wolf hyrids, Andrew and Jessica came to the conclusion that maybe they could write a book on that topic as well...'Between Dog and Wolf' was a long time in the making. After graduating from Purdue University, Andrew moved to Chicago to see what real world applications his degree and experience might lend him. He worked for a time training dogs for a reputable pet containment company in the greater Chicago area, but his interest in behavior and education rather than training drove his interests elsewhere. It was during this period that he and Jessica began their work on 'Between Dog and Wolf'. Andrew spent nearly a month on the road with Jessica during one winter in an attempt to meet as many animals (and people) as possible so that they might have a better understanding in writing a book purporting to have some expertise with wolf hybrids. In 2010 he moved from Chicago to northern Colorado and worked for a spell in an open admission shelter as this most recent book was reaching its publication date. Andrew currently resides 'in the middle of nowhere' in northern Colorado. He is thankful for many things, including the love and support of his parents, his partner, and the many winter snowdays he gets where the roads are impassible. He is also greatful for the life and love shared with him by his since passed German Shepherd, Chaos, who was a fantastic dog, but a terrible horse, as many children mistook him for due to his size.
