Reading list: Halloween Book Bingo - Supernatural square
This category on the Halloween Bingo is almost a gimme square: most of the other categories include or imply some variation of "Supernatural" (witches, ghosts, vampires, magic).
To keep this list from being largely a repeat of the other bingo lists, I'm going to stick with supernatural books that *don't* include witches, ghosts, vampires, or werewolves in the main premise. They might show up now and again, but these will be books that are oriented toward psychical talents and malevolence (and zombies).
NOTE: The focus of this list is NOT the limitations of the bingo square itself: anything 'Supernatural' will qualify for the bingo.
Please leave any recommendations in the comments below and I'll add them to the list asap.

Reading this list (3)
C.R. Maturin: "Melmoth, the Wanderer" (ISBN 13: 9780140447613; ISBN 10: 014044761X) -- also for "Gothic," "Classic Horror," "Genre: Horror," and "Dark and Stormy Night."
Christina Rossetti: "Goblin Market" (ISBN 13: 9780811816496; ISBN 10: 0811816494) -- also for "Gothic" and "Scary Women Authors"
Otfried Preußler: "Krabat" (aka "The Satanic Mill") (ISBN 13: 9783522144100; ISBN 10: 3522144104) -- YA, so would also work for "YA Horror"
Also, looking at the other end of the spectrum, there are
-- good fairies and elves in Matt Ruff's "Fool on the Hill" (ISBN 13: 9780802135353; ISBN 10: 0802135358)
-- and very bad elves in Terry Pratchett's "Lords and Ladies" (ISBN 13: 9780552138918; ISBN 10: 0552138916), which is part of the "Witches" subset, so it would obviously also qualify for that particular square.
And then ... I don't know if anybody besides me would be nutty enough to read Shakespeare for a bingo game, but just in case, the Bard's two plays with supernatural elements (other than "Macbeth": witches) are
* "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (ISBN 13: 9780743477543; ISBN 10: 0743477545) -- fairies and elves
* and "The Tempest" (ISBN 13: 9780743482837; ISBN 10: 0743482832) -- Ariel, the spirit; and Prospero's magic gifts.
I was really just aiming at not making this list a duplicate of the others, and offer the bingo players a wide variety of choices.
Elentarri's Book Blog:
Patricia A McKillip also has a whole bunch of short stand-alone novels that cover all sorts of topics, usually with some sort of paranormal/mystical/magical bent.
[...]
All of them are good, especially the Riddle-Master Trilogy.
[...]
Atrix Wolfe by McKillip has a sort of shape shifting wolf thing in it. Nearly all her books have some sort of sorceress/sorcerer/witch/wizard in it. Od Magic is a good one if you want a wizard/sorcerer and a magic school.
Linda Hilton:
Jennifer Roberson has a whole series on shapeshifters, the Cheysuli, but I don't know if there are any wolves in it.
Maybe Linda or someone else who knows the series can help with Jennifer Roberson's Cheysuli books?
J.R.R. Tolkien: "Tales from the Perilous Realm"
Tony Hillerman: "The Ghostway", "Skinwalker", "Dance Hall of the Dead"
James D. Doss: "The Shaman Laughs", "The Shaman Sings", "Grandmother Spider", "White Shell Woman"
Agatha Christie: "While the Light Lasts"
Wilkie Collins: "The Ghost and Mrs. Zant"
Neil Gaiman: "Fragile Things", "Smoke and Mirrors", "American Gods"
Neil Gaiman / Terry Pratchett: "Good Omens"
Washington Irving: "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"
Henry James: "The Turn of the Screw"
Stephen King: "Hearts in Atlantis", "The Green Mile"
Naguib Mahfouz: "Voices from the Other World"
Frederick Marryat: "The Phantom Ship" -- also qualifies as "gothic"
Daphne du Maurier: "The House on the Strand"
Douglas Preston / Lincoln Child: "The Cabinet of Curiosities"
Otfried Preussler: "Krabat" -- also for "Chilling Children"
Theodor Storm: "The Dykemaster" ("Der Schimmelreiter") -- also qualifies as "gothic"
This book fits the supernatural square is several ways and its pretty good without being gory or horrifying. No sex.
the book is set in Dublin, Ireland just before Christmas (for Christmas Bingo?)and makes use of various churches and one "castle"as settings.
It does sound like a cute little book -- perfect both for the Halloween bingo and for a pre-Christmas read!
From the description, I'd definitely also say it qualifies for "amateur sleuth" in the bingo.
25 holiday stories / books from all over the world *would* make for a great bingo. Or, heck, just something of the (more reduced) size of the "12 Tasks of the Holiday Season" version from last year ...
