I'm fully aware that this is a novel from the 1800s, and that it's my modern point of view that is causing me anguish, but all the racism in this book really made me angry. The story was ok, and engaging enough, but it just wasn't enough to save it for me.

A tremendous romp from Jules Verne; fast paced and funny. The humour is largely based on caricatures of national stereotypes, however; the Brit (Fogg) is reserved to the extreme, unflappable, brave in a noble, resolute but not passionate way; the Frenchman is brave, resourceful, prone to passions an...

I love Jules Verne. He's a ton of fun to read. The adventure stuff is fun, of course, but he also creates awesome characters. Nemo's probably his best-known, but the supremely phlegmatic Phineas Fogg of this book is nearly as memorable. His complete disinterest in exploring the places he passes ...

This is a hilarious book filled with stereotypical characters and locations, such as the violent American West, the volatile Frenchman and the quiet, unemotional Englishman. It was a fast and fun read. Tomorrow I am going to see this performed on stage and am eager to see how it is staged since ...

Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it, but I just didn't finish this one and I don't know why. I read about 3/4 of it and then... slowly just started to lose interest in it all together. I struggled for a few pages and then I put it down. I don't like putting books down but I hate making myself mis...

I read this first when I was young - no more than 10'ish I'd say - and loved it. Hadn't read it for years though, so I felt it was time for a reread. ... I'm thinking it must have been an abridged version I read back then, because though this version was short too, I felt it dragged terribly. I thin...

One of those books that probably helped reinforce the stereotype that India is a land of Elephants and Snake Charmers and little else. At one point, the French man servant even refers to 'more civilized lands', when they finally reach the US pacific coast, which had me in splits. That aside, a bree...

2.5 Dragged at the end. And...I didn't really like Phileas--not surprising since he has no personality.

The twist at the end is so ridiculous and implausible that it prompted Philip Jose Farmer to rewrite the story as an alien spy adventure. The details have mercifully been erased from my memory, but I believe Fogg and friends are late getting to the club because they've been engaged in an extended ra...
