Jules Verne's career as a novelist began in 1863, when he struck a new vein in fiction - stories that combined popular science and exploration. In "Around the World in Eighty Days", Phileas Fogg rashly bets his companions GBP20,000 that he can travel around the entire globe in just eighty days - and he is determined not to lose. Breaking the well-established routine of his daily life, the reserved Englishman immediately sets off for Dover, accompanied by his hot-blooded French manservant, Passepartout. Traveling by train, steamship, sailboat, sledge, and even elephant, they must overcome storms, kidnappings, natural disasters, Sioux attacks, and the dogged Inspector Fix of Scotland Yard to win the extraordinary wager. Combining exploration, adventure, and a thrilling race against time, "Around the World in Eighty Days" gripped audiences upon its publication and remains hugely popular to this day.

About halfway through the book I switched to the audiobook, narrated by Jim Dale, and this choice has bee...

5.0 Around the World in 80 Days
"A true Englishman doesn't joke when he is talking about so serious a thing as a wager," replied Phileas Fogg, solemnly. With this we're off to the one of the best adventure stories... And no matter how often I read this book, I still get excited about whether they will make it back to the Reform C...

5.0 Fast race, turn of the century style
That was awesome! I love when these classics turn out to be addictive page-turners. Even though I knew Fogg had to triumph, I admit I had several moments of true anxiety, so double points. Into the podium of Verne's favorites it goes. Now, what do I do with this furious raging of my wanderlust?

This is full of adventure. It was written at a time when people couldn’t find facts about other parts of the world as easily as we can today. Even though it may not be completely accurate, it sparks an interest by showing different countries around the world. I enjoyed the trip. It highlights di...
