First, this review does contain spoilers for Ashfall. Please be warned. The circumstances of Ashen Winter should never have come about and I could never truly get into the story while thinking that. Alex risked life and limb to make it Illinois, only to find out his parents are no longer there. That’...

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, Ashfall, when I read it in 2011. Mike Mullin's characters are likable and realistic, and the storyline is frighteningly plausible. With my own hatred for winter, snow and ice, this series pretty much reflects the most frightening of apolcayptic scenario...

Did not finish after 30% :( So, so, sorry! Here's a rundown why I didn't like it enough to finish it (but I won't give any rating):* I find it highly annoying that Alex is such a wussy. He's all talk, but he doesn't walk the walk. He tries to act all tough, but it's always Darla saving him. Aside fr...

Ashen Winter is the second book in the dystopian series Ashfall by Mike Mullen. The series is set after a super volcanic eruption at Yellowstone plunges the United States into chaos and follows teenager Alex Halprin as he tries to find his girlfriend, Darla, who has been kidnapped by a cannibalistic...

I really like Mike Mullin written books. I think he really has a great start to a post apocalypse series. When I read the first book I really started caring for the characters especially the way Darla and Alex had to rely on one another to get through everything. Really the one reason I gave this bo...

Really good sequel, one that keeps the pace of the first book. But I think I could have given it a solid 5 stars if there weren't so many things happening in this book. It seemed like it was one thing after another. Like a fish jumping out of the frying pan into the fire kinda way.I think the consta...

Darla was the one character that made the first book for me, without her Alex and this series would just annoying and forgettable. I was disappointed to see her not be there for half the book, it was like a vital part of this entire story was missing. Also, I really hope I am not in for pissy fights...

booknook — Young Adult book reviewsRight off the bat, it's obvious that I'm not rating Ashen Winter as high as Ashfall. Ashen Winter was a fascinating story that once again really dives into disaster and humanity (or lack thereof), but at the end of the day, I don't feel like the book was much diff...

I read Ashfall last year and loved it. Ashen Winter takes place shortly after the events in Ashfall. Due to the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano and the resulting volcanic winter, the temperatures have dropped to below freezing and Alex's world is even harsher than it was in Ashfall. The acti...
