Sean McGrath takes readers into the chaotic energy of Bangkok, enticed by the sights and aromas of the enigmatic city. He tucks into the street food on the city's sidewalks, watches monks in saffron robes collecting alms and then heads for the waterways, taking longtail boats down the river canals, viewing waterside temples and floating markets. He visits the Grand Palace with the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, browses the maze of stalls at the weekend market in Chatuchak, and then in the evening takes in the night market and the seedy allure of the entertainment district at Patpong. The next day, while touring the city, McGrath encounters a strange man distributing pamphlets on the prophesies of a spiritual teacher and soliciting donations. A member of a religious fringe group, he marks McGrath out as a potential recruit and invites him to a retreat at the local commune. On a whim, he goes to check out the place and is initiated into the spiritual deception of an apocalyptic cult. The group believes their leader to be the final prophet of the end times and asserts that they are the true people of God. This is a compelling story of messianic delusions and extreme beliefs and the lure of destructive cults.
