Such a wonderfully, charming story about a little girl, a town lost in its sadness, and a dog named Winn-Dixie who managed to remind them all how to love each other. It also leaves an odd taste in your heart...a hint of root beer and strawberries and something else...melancholy...but, in a good way....
Confession time: I'm really not a fan of animal stories. I do like animals and adore my dog. I just don't really like books about animals. They're generally too sappy for my taste. [You fall in love with a sweet animal and then something tragic happens. My emotions can't handle that.] I've known abo...
(Original review posted on my livejournal blog: http://www.livejournal.com/editjournal.bml?journal=intoyourlungs&itemid=11262)Why I Read It: I'm not sure actually. I've always been kind of curious about DiCamillo's work, especially after her novel The Tales of Despereaux exploded in popularity a few...
★★★★★ Didn’t realize this was a Juvenile book when I got the audio from the library for a challenge on “Southern Belles” -- but I’m glad I listened to tale of a motherless preacher’s daughter who adopts a big mangy dog. Loved this short story and Cherry Jones' narration is wonderful. She is so go...

Winn Dixie helps Opal find more friends in the strangest of places; from church, to the witches house, to the library, to the pet s...
And now I move on to Newbery Honor books. This was my first and I loved it. The kind of book I want to read again, to share with others. A redemptive book about the amazing power of truth and forgiveness and friendship to make the world a better place.
Both the girls and I love this. It's sweet without being cloying, at least in part because the dog is so funny. We also really like the film, and the dogs who play the title role.
My first DiCamillo, but not her best. Another book read with a camper that I was "tutoring" but I read the whole book ahead of her and she never finished it.
