I picked this book up as part of my Grand-Masters challenge. And while it's written by a good sci-fi/spec fic writer, I don't think it really qualifies. But for politeness sake, I'll keep it there. It's a fun little book that actually teaches you things (science-y things!), and isn't tedious. It'...

My main problem with Connie Willis books is that they usually have great characters and an interesting plot, but are thick with too much narrative padding, typically in the form of "funny bits" about bureaucratic incompetence and miscommunication due to mishaps with modern technology, and exhaustive...

A good math and science story. It's a real pity that computers don't work the way they are described in here - I firmly believe that more insight = better science. This book wasn't Sci-Fi but was definitely Science Fiction.

Revisiting this on audio was a lot of fun. For some reason, it was funnier to listen to than it was to read. Self-organized criticality makes me smile. I dig smart science woven into my fantasy.

A perfect little package of happiness. Cute, smart and amusing, I've been thoroughly entertained by this audiobook over the last 10 days. I liked but didn't love this book. I felt like I could trace several of the themes from All Clear here as well--most notably a system that looks disastrous and isn't. It was also fun to read about the different fads and see where some of the ones she describes ended up. [Feb. 2011]

I really wish Connie Willis wrote more humor because she's rather good at it. This one was much less complicated than my favorite of hers, To Say Nothing of the Dog, but it had just the right degree of silliness to tide me over. Basic premise: Sandra, a scientist working for a company that doesn't r...

I only read this book once, but there's rarely a day that goes by where I don't think about it.

Notes:Interesting snippets of information on different fads.Nice weaving in of the fairy tale "Toads and Diamonds".A bit slow and meandering, but wraps up well at the end.
