A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows Francie Nolan as she grows up in Boston as part of a poor, second-generation, American family. A major theme running throughout the book is Francie’s mother’s focus on seeing her children educated and giving them a better life than she herself had. Francie’s own lo...

I think this is one of those weirdly conditional books. When I read this book I was in high school and liked it just fine. I could see reading it when I was in my early 20's and really liking it. Now I'm not sure if I would like it more or less than I did when I actually read it. I am pretty sure I ...

Can't believe I've never read this book before. Of course, if I had would I have appreciated Francie's story as much?

This book has been on the periphery of my consciousness for most of my adult life. However, it was not on the syllabus when I was at school or at university, which may explain my failure to read it until now. I am so glad that I finally decided to listen to the excellent audiobook narrated by Kate B...

ON COMPLETION:My views expressed below remain unchanged, having completed the novel. I will simply add a few points. Although I loved this book as a child, reading it as an adult gave me less. When my 12 year old granddaughter told me she was reading A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, I could no longer put off rereading it! I had wanted to for so long, and it was just the perfect impetus. What a joy it is to read and talk about a book with her! Perhaps it will be one of her favorites too. I could ...

We get to see that a woman’s life in the 1910’s isn’t easy, but we can also see there are many things that are worthwhile and the hope that if you want to make something of your life, you can accomplish it by trying and have strength and faith.

I am a bit less than half-way through this book and am yet puzzled when/why and who would think that this book would need to be placed on a banned book list. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a perfect example of those who perceive themselves to be "authority" to limit what we, as individuals, read are ve...

This is my favorite book, after having read and reread it so many times in junior high and high school. Something about the detailed writing and main character is just so enjoyable, and I still love it now. The later part of the book is a bit different than the beginning, but, overall, it's still a ...
