Entrenched secrets, mysterious spirits, and an astonishing friendship weave together in this extraordinary and haunting debut.

Nothing matters. Only Bird matters. And he flew away.

Jewel never knew her brother Bird, but all her life she has lived in his shadow. Her parents blame Grandpa for the tragedy of their family’s past; they say that Grandpa attracted a malevolent spirit—a duppy—into their home. Grandpa hasn’t spoken a word since. Now Jewel is twelve, and she lives in a house full of secrets and impenetrable silence.

Jewel is sure that no one will ever love her like they loved Bird, until the night that she meets a mysterious boy in a tree. Grandpa is convinced that the boy is a duppy, but Jewel knows that he is something more. And that maybe—just maybe—the time has come to break through the stagnant silence of the past.

Don't let the fact that the book summary really doesn't say much turn you off of this one. Things I thought were interesting: Duppy- Jamaican Patois word of Northwest African origin meaning ghost or spirit Xolo - considered sacred dogs by the Aztecs because they believed the dogs were ne...

This book reminded me somewhat of Skellig by David Almond. It's slow at times, but not bad. Often Jewel's voice sounded too mature for a twelve year old's, but once I accepted her voice as it was, it stopped bothering me.

Bird, this novel that hit me hard but left me the pieces to put myself back together was more than I expected when I opened the pages and I started to read about Jewel and her family. She was born the night her five-year old brother decided to fly off the boulder because his name was Bird and he had...

Absolutely beautiful. This is a stunning debut novel by Crystal Chan, I really hope she writes more because I loved everything about this book. In a way it reminds me of, Bridge to Terrebithia because the writing is stellar and its a rather hauntingly, sad tale. Twelve year old Jewel was born the ...
