Miriam Black has an interesting talent. Whenever she touches a person's bare skin, she can tell when and how they die. On the run most of her life, she gets by hitchhiking and stealing. When a good Samaritan picks her up, she finds that he dies a few weeks later, saying her name as a knife goes t...
And this started so well! I inhaled the first 70 pages without blinking. And then... it all went downhill. Needless over-the-top gore, failure to really explore the core fantasy concept (maybe in future books?), unnecessary overuse of the R-word and misogynistic insults (If you won't use the N-word,...
I keep trying to come up for a better adjective for this story than raw, and I can't do it. (The book's not unpolished; that's quite different.) It's a three-in-the-morning, diner-coffee, grit-spit-and-grime ragged tired running lonely scared book. And it manages to work through all the storytellin...

That said, no matter how much I love about a book's style and the voice of the protagonist (and Miriam has a strong voice right from line one of the book),...
