I've said it before and I'll say it again, Charles Dickens is a genius with his cast. Another thing I find really enjoyable about his work is he has a way of making you assume things that aren't true, to the point you don't even question them, which makes for good plot twists.I think this is my favo...

This is generally considered one of Dickens's best works, though it's not the most widely read or frequently filmed, because it's also one of his longest works and has a ton of subplots. At the center of Bleak House is the case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, which has been running through the Chancery Cou...

1.5 stars. to be fair, i skimmed at least 40% of this book. but i just found so much of it to be completely superfluous; the entire thing could have been written, without loss, in like 250 pages. i guess his long-windedness allows him to talk about some things that i'm glad he put in - like pover...

If you're like me, you like well-written books but you're a little skeptical about classics. The question in your mind while reading reviews is something like: "Okay, so it's great literature, so it paints a complex portrait of mid-19th-century England, that's great and all, but is it FUN? Will I ac...

My first encounter with this story was on a sleepless night when I caught the first two installments of the 2005 BBC mini-series, captivating by the way, on PBS. The problem with PBS is that I never seem to get to finish all of those period mini-series that I start. Something always gets in the way,...

This is one of the only Charles Dickens books that I have really liked. I think it was because of the storyline. I found the storyline similiar to a Jane Austen versus Dickens' other books.

At All Ears, we often recommend that children both read along with a book as they listen to the audio version - it helps them comprehend and retain more from the book. Recently, some of our adult customers mentioned that they also do this. I decided to give this a try with Bleak House by Charles D...

I just saw the PBS mini-series (thanks Monica!)and it made me want to revisit this book (maybe I ought to add a "currently re-reading shelf?"). I forgot what an eccentric cast of character this is. - not just the supporting cast (Conversation Kenge, Mrs. Flite, etc), but even main characters like Es...
