I like a good baseball game in person, watching it on TV, not so much. Listening to Granny retell the story of Blockade Billy, I felt as if I was sitting right there beside him. Granny retold in great detail, everything about that remarkable season, his enthusiasm and energy could definitely be felt...
A solid story that held my attention. I have to say, it takes some real skill to make me interested in baseball. Not as enjoyable as some of his other work but still a good read.
The audio book was really neat. I imagine had I read the actual novella, I would have been slightly bored and disappointed. But the narrator made things interesting on the audio.
This is a set of two short story/novellas, one being the title yarn and another called Morality. The first, Blockade Billy, isn't much of a story, but may have great appeal to baseball diehards, like King himself. That's the staying power it had for me- it wasn't a very good horror story but I enjoye...
Even Steve King can't make me love reading about baseball, but this wasn't too bad. The only reason I grabbed it at the library was because it says on the cover "Contains the Chilling Bonus Story 'Morality.'" So I figured I'd get a good short story even if I didn't like the baseball novella.
I like baseball. Watching it. I don't follow or understand stats or anything, and I'm not "down with the lingo". I understand the basic concept of the game and am pretty good with the rules, but that's about the extent of it: I enjoy watching baseball games. I know now that I do not like reading abo...
Not a bad story, a nice palate cleanser from the Tournament of Books downers. It's a decent narrative voice and just enough game detail to make you check the calendar to see when teams report for Spring Training (Tampa Bay pitchers and catchers: 5 days from now.)
At slightly over 100 pages, it's a quick read but worth every second. King's casual but intense style works perfectly here and he knows his baseball. Yet I don't think you need to know baseball (I don't) to really enjoy this. It ranks as one of King's better novellas.
