When I read The Invention of Hugo Cabret, I was enchanted by the pictures but not by the words. In Wonderstruck, the written story is much stronger–helped, I think, by the fact that the text and the pictures tell two distinct stories. They are related, but I won’t say how. [Oct. 2011]
Fantastic! Selznick is a marvel with his storytelling and his illustrations - not to mention how they weave two stories together that are poignant. I highly recommend it.
Pretty genius, how the written story from the 1970s corresponds with the drawn story from the 1920s. And the way it ties together is so amazing and satisfying. I subtracted one star because for some reason I didn't feel connected to Ben, despite many reasons I should. Definitely a great book, though...
