He said, “The only time I felt worthy, the only time I felt acceptable or loveable was when I could be sexually intimate with somebody because that felt good.” He also told himself that he was being a nice guy when spent time with boys whom he imagined he was helping and who gave him a sexual buzz. Sometimes, when he thought about what he was doing, he felt like a monster. Handsome and well-educated, he said once the abuse came out, he feared becoming "Bubba's Bitch" in prison. Joe was arrested and convicted of child sexual abuse. He spent two years in a county jail on work release. He did not become Bubba’s bitch. He also participated in a community-based treatment program. He would not go to prison unless he failed treatment. He was also on closely supervised probation for 20 years.This second edition has new material on what Joe said about how he became a person who sexually abuses children. Like many other people who abuse children, he was not sexually abused as a child and he grew up in a middle class family.
