As if the subject matter wasn't fascinating enough - based on the true story of the last woman to be executed in Iceland - Hannah Kent's true talent in her novel Burial Rites lies in evoking time and place. Set in the desolate far north of Iceland in 1829, what *really* happened to accused murderess...

Based on true events, this is an interesting story about Agnus Magnusdottir, the last woman to be executed in Iceland. It feels as though you are with Agnus during her last days, listening as she tells her own version of what happened on the night the two men were killed.

I haven't been on this site in such a long time, which I am sorry for. I just got busy with school and at some point I forgot about this site, since I also keep track of my reading progress on Goodreads. Which I think is a bit more easy and faster to do as this website. But I enjoy the whole ''blog ...

I started reading this one an *age* ago, but somebody put a hold on it at the library so I couldn't renew it. Given the choice of incurring massive fines (it's something like 2c a day - I'm glad of the automated machines at the library because the librarians always used to apologise to me that I owe...

Burial Rites is a book that really hits you like an emotional freight train. While I've been known to shed a tear or two during movies, I'm not someone who cries while reading. Hardly ever, really (with the exception of a certain character dying at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince...

I’ve never known a book with such poorly realized characters to affect me so much. And that, my friends, is my rating in a nutshell. But for those who want more specifics, I will provide them. There will be SPOILERS: it’s pretty hard to spoil a book when the jacket copy tells you the ending, but I d...

Wow, has my year of reading started off with a bang. I’ll start with the easy part. Iceland is a country I’ve always wanted to visit. Learning more about its history, farming culture, and the wild landscape has piqued my interest even more. I was fascinated and at times repelled by some of the bu...

This was quite a book. Set in Iceland in 1828, it is the tale of Agnes, a servant who has been sentenced to death for murder. Sent to live with a family to work while her appeal wends it way in distant Denmark, Agnes must come to grips with the future that awaits her. Gradually, bit by bit, the trut...
