Disjointed. Everything about Case Histories, the first book in Kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie mystery series, is disjointed. The mysteries are separate from the characters, the three mysteries are separate from each other, the characters are separate from each other. I’m intrigued by the sequels bec...

First rate, wonderful characterization, mordant humour, the archetypically phlegmatic detective with a terrific young voracious and charming daughter, and a set of intriguing puzzles. Great book!

Kate Atkinson popped up on the radar because her new(ish???) book "Life After Life" is receiving press. The only DNF book for me this year was a Kate Atkinson (Emotionally Weird - it was literally about NOTHING). I decided to give her another go-round since her first book (Behind the Scenes at the...

A literary, character-driven mystery tale that's just as good as everyone says it is. The various plots are handled very well, the family drama is compelling and never overwrought, and it's a total page-turner.

I feel like I have to be careful here because a friend recommended this book, but I really can't give it more than 2 stars. It was an okay, readable page turner but that's about the best I can say.I was annoyed in the beginning that the Land sisters' names all ended in "ia" (Olivia, Julia, Amelia, ...

Kate Atkinson has written a great character in Jackson Brodie. I made the mistake of reading the four Jackson Brodie novels out of sequence. I wish there were somewhere in all the lists that I’ve seen where someone said “Read this one First” or something like that. Here, I will tell you which one to...

Pearl Ruled: CASE HISTORIES by KATE ATKINSONRating: 2* of five (p102)First of the hugely popular Jackson Brodie series of mysteries set in Scotland, this book comes super-positively blurbed by Stephen King, recommended by site royalty, and could not possibly have left me more flat, uninterested, and...

I picked this up after seeing the PBS Mystery treatment. Usually, I enjoy the books this leads me to, but in this case the screenplay was much better. I actually cared about the characters on the screen. I didn't care about anyone in the book, and Brodie seems is just another character, or worse a p...

Withdrawn from Swansea LibraryHow lucky were they? A heat wave in the middle of the school holidays, exactly where it belonged.Loved this. To my mind the sisters were straight out of Gormenghast - well yes, there are some differences but you can see where I'm coming from.--------------------By way o...

This should actually get two stars only but me and Kate Atkinson go way back. I read her 'Behind the Scenes in the Museum' when I was a newbie to the grown-up literature and I loved it. I am quite afraid to go and revisit it now because after reading 'Case Histories' I am not sure if Atkinson can ac...
