I did not finish this book. I started it in August and it took me forever to read. I only got to page 400 before the library called to tell me this book was overdue- and I had renewed it the maximum amount of times. This is a magnificent work, a phenomenal accomplishment, describing the reign of Catherine the Great, covering her own history and the future of her reign, including all major and minor players who participated in her march to greatness. The subtitle for this book is a very good choice, since this is a book mostly about Catherine the Great and only about Russian history when it's related to her. I wanted to read this book because I realized that I know almost nothing about Russian history.

This is an epic biography! It is thorough, not only giving readers a great portrait of Catherine, but also a great portrait of the place and times in which she lived. This is a lengthy, but extremely readable book.

I needn't have worried. One of Massie's strengths is his ability to bring his readers close enough ...

There were two reasons that I read this book, One, I had read Massie's Pulitzer Prize winning book, Nicholas and Alexandra previously and I wanted to read this book after reading that book to gain some historical perspective on how previous Russian tzars had influenced the decisions that Nicholas ma...

This wasn't quite a five-star read for me, but it just feels so wrong to give it four stars. Maybe 4.5?
