I understand why this book is a classic. I love the directness and simplicity of the narrative, which has Mattie Ross addressing the reader with her account of what happened and what she thinks about that. Mattie Ross' personality and values pulse in every paragraph of her account. I can see her cle...

It was ok. I did not connect with any of the characters. The plot also felt flat.

The first line grabbed me, and is a fair summation of the voice and plot: People do not give credence that a fourteen-year-old girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father's blood but it did not seem so strange then, although I will say it did not happen every day. A novel with a 14 year old girl protagonist can usually be classed as a “coming of age” story. Not in this case. Mattie Ross, the 14 year old protagonist in this book, is the only mature person in the story. All the adults in the story need to grow up.I’ve not seen the two movies that have been mad...

Haha I didn't know this was originally a book. Anyway, I was assigned to read the first couple of chapters of this for a class, and I thought it was cool (plus I liked the movie so yeah), so I'm interested in reading the rest of it!

This is a book that I think I will enjoy even more the second time around. I'm sure I missed some of the dry humor the first time around. I'm looking forward to a 2nd reading. I'm also really looking forward to my next Charles Portis book, but I've gotta pace myself as they are pretty limited. O...

Mattie is an amazing character. She really has true grit. Easy, fast and fun read.

This was a great read. The story is an action-packed western, but the greatness is all about Mattie Ross. As a narrator, she's unsentimental and matter-of-fact about some pretty terrible events. At times this is pretty funny, at others it just lets some of the horror speak for itself. As a character...
