It makes sense for the Caldecott to honor wordless picture books. An author who can tell a compelling story just through their illustrations is of course worthy of praise and accolades. That said, I don't really like wordless picture books. This is just a personal preference. When reading a picture ...

This is the sort of book that makes me wish I had a captive audience of young children, so that I could read it aloud to them. As you might imagine, a book of international endearments is charming.Library copy

Raschka's spare brush strokes remind me of Chinese calligraphy. In keeping with the Eastern art tradition, he sticks to the integrity of the flat surface. There's been a big return to the non-representational, impressionistic picturebook over the past decade, which is a nice trend. This book reminds...

A ripply suggestion of a dog plays with a round dot that is supposed to conjure a ball in this wordless mess. Somewhere, Randolph Caldecott is saying in a quiet, genteel English accent, "Why, I'm not sure, old chap, but at least I could bloody well DRAW."
