Harold S. Kushner's Conquering Fear might be viewed as the stand-alone prequel to his classic 1981 bestseller, When Bad Things Happen to Good People. For most of us, fear is the monster that pursues us even into the night, attacking us at every age, on every side. Whether our anxiety concerns unemployment, a spouse's desertion, terrorist attacks, or aging, the effects can be paralyzing. Rabbi Kushner advises readers to approach their fears straight on, assuring us that once confronted, fears can present us with extraordinary opportunities. This measured, intelligent book possesses none of the hoopla or false claims of many self-help nostrums. Instaed, it offers one of the rarest gifts: the gift of calm.
