I thought I'd be reading the tales of a select few of a thousand stories, instead, I only read one. This isn't as much a story of the 982 Jews fleeing from Europe and Nazi terror to be President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's guests in the United States as it's a story of a young woman making the trip w...

really interesting historical stuff about galileo and about science and physics of the time. i was less interested in the stuff about his daughter, but it does seem always somehow surprising to learn about the private lives of famous intellectuals.also, it was interesting to read a book all about s...

Sobel does a good job of integrating science, mythology, history, and literature in this informal overview of the solar system. While educational, Sobel's style is quite readable. I found this book difficult to put down, and would definitely recommend it.

This is a nice pleasant book to read, but I don't think it is the author's best. I found Longitude and Galileo's Daughter to be better books overall. Part of the reason that I did not think as much of the book is the chapter on Uranus and Neptune where she uses a long letter as the way to carry the ...

This is another one I wish I could give 3 1/2 stars. It's stronger in the first half than the second half. But I usually read fiction, so this is a bit out of my comfort zone anyway. And Sobel does a good job of allowing for that - bridging the gap between intellectual types and people (like me) who...

Dava Sobel ably tells the story of John Harrison's lifelong quest to develop an instrument capable of determining longitude in all climes. In response to a tragic sinking which took place close to the English coast early in the 18th century, owing to the inability of a ship's captain to accurately d...

I rather enjoyed this little book! It explains the planets and solar system in everyday language while drawing on history, myth, science fiction, art, literature which makes what could be dry, boring material come to life and enjoyable to read. There is nothing earth shattering in the info covered i...

Interesting to read about the trials and tribulations of Galileo and his on/off heretical Copernican beliefs. I was less interested in the letters from his daughter though (she always seems to be asking for money – and that put me right off!). Personally would have preferred if it was a more straigh...

Fascinating book! I never realized that figuring out longitude was such a big problem. There is lots of scientific info in the book, but it's not so technical I couldn't understand it.
