Originally read April 27, 2014 I enjoyed this second book in the Belisarius series as much as I had enjoyed the first one, and for pretty much the same reasons. The characters were likeable (except the ones you weren’t supposed to like) and funny, and the story was interesting. As with the first b...

Originally read April 20, 2014 I had rather hoped I would hate this book. Seriously. Many years ago, when I first purchased my Kindle, I downloaded dozens of books from the Baen free library. That included the first four books in this series. Those books, along with many other free and cheap b...

I gave up after about two hundred pages, the story just couldn't hold my interest. Not sure why--there have been books I've hated with a passion and I could point to this that jarred or that which annoyed. The style was pleasant enough and there were some interesting magical concepts, but the world ...

Although interesting it really doesn't delve into the relationships of the characters so they appear a fair bit flat. I honestly preferred David Weber's Excalibour Alternative which has almost the same premise but set in the Elizabethan era.

The first part, with the young man leaving his home reminded me of the first book of the Wheel of Time series.Downside 2: It was som...

In brief: Drake creates a fantastic world of feel-it-in-your-bones magic, a great, great sphinx duel, and some quite interesting characters atop a richly layered, well-researched, might as well be speaking Latin it's so authentic ancient "not Rome". First in a series; fantastic cover artwork of Traj...

Queen of Demons the second installment in the Lord of the Isles series continues on with the same troupe of likable characters; and, much like the first book, has a few characters that play vital roles for this book only then disappear. However, the plot in this book is even weaker than in the first...

Servant of the Dragon is the third book in the Lord of the Isles series by David Drake and I am currently reading it. So far it is pretty good - with the same kind of elements found in the prior books. Huge problems are discovered and then solved with suprising ease. However, both Sharina and Cashel...

Overall, Lord of the Isles was a fun read. The characters are all pretty likable and the world they live in is a bit different than your normal fantasy fare. However, the way the story goes the confluence of so many seemingly important people in one small little hamlet is pretty inexplicable. Perhap...
