An alright read, but it live up to what I was led to expect by all my friends who love the series. I'm going to assume it's suffering from being the first book, and the series should improve as I go in.

So, I started this book a few days ago with much misgivings. Turns out, I was right. I had the same ol' issues that I have always had while reading King:a) I find the descriptions too lengthy b) I realize every time that there is such a thing as too much tell and less show, just as there can be too ...

It makes sense that Stephen King would choose the trappings of a Western to put a unique spin on epic fantasy. The iconic image of a lone gunfighter riding on horseback, rescuing damsels, and facing off in single combat against the villain, are direct descendants of the tropes found in Arthurian and...

I am so glad that a friend of mine suggested this to me. When I opened it and started reading, I was afraid I wouldn't get into it. I hadn't sought out any info on the series at that point, so I thought that it was simply a western. I was pleasantly suprised when I realized that it is more like a sc...

This book is often labeled as a bit of a slog that first-time readers must traverse in order to access the wonders of mid-world. I've always been a bit puzzled by this as I find the Gunslinger to be both rich and desolate, full of shocking imagery and a mysterious world that has moved on past civil...

The Gunslinger is definitely an oddity in Stephen King's list of written works -- it's trippy, cold, and a bit confusing for newcomers to the Dark Tower series. King's typical style is more warm and inviting, comparable to a longtime friend putting his arm around your shoulder and telling you a tale...

Stephen King is the master of creepy books, and this one is no exception. The Gunslinger is book #1 of the eight-book Dark Tower series. It follows a Gunslinger, Roland, as he tracks his enemy through a harsh landscape that is very similar to—and very different from—the American west. The imagery in t...

Much better than I expected, to be honest. I LOVED the idea of setting a fantasy quest type of story in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic nuclear desert waste world.Other than that, the writing is simple and straightforward. It's still too soon to analyze character depth (which is, in itself, a ...
