Rose Watkins-Smythe is trying to raise money for the restoration of the historic but almost forgotten Japanese garden at her home - Mere Castle, by selling off some of the vast amount of bamboo which has grown up around it. Local nurseryman James Treasby has managed to pass some of it onto Sebastian Gilling-Jones, one of London’s most fashionable garden designers, but there is a lot more of it to go round. Herbal healer Catkin Moonspirit isn’t interested though, as all she wants is an oak tree, with its accompanying spirit - for a very special purpose.
