Ten years ago, Gregory Maguire turned the familiar tale of The Wizard of Oz on its ear with Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The book, his first, became a best seller, then was adapted into a hit Broadway musical, Wicked. with Son of a Witch, Maguire returns to Oz, picking...
Goat Heads and Sand Burrs, P. Kirby's Reading Blog
A caravan traveling through an isolated part of the Land of Oz comes across a corpse. This isn’t the first they’ve seen on their journey, but the others have been “scraped,” the faces of the dead removed with surgical precision.Except this body isn’t dead. Yet. Though badly beaten, Liir Thropp, a ...

IMHO it's cheating to add this to my "read" books, as I didn't finish it. As I've said elsewhere, once I'm into a book I almost never put it down. It's like a personal challenge or something. Occasionally when I'm really, really struggling, limping through a book, resentful of every page, a good ...

...that would be Lost by Gregory Maguire... not the TV show, which I still have never seen. Oi.For the record, I am an ardent fan of Mr. Maguire. I've read Wicked a few times as well as several of his other books. I love his style, his gusto, his wit.I did not, however, love Lost. It focused too lon...

In the third book of The Wicked Years series, we learn the story of Brrr, better known as the Cowardly Lion. Told mainly in retrospect, as he remembers his past, we get an interesting look at the Cowardly Lion, mainly a bit player in the life of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. He made many ...

Surprising, poignant and ultimately satisfying - this was not what I expected and so much more than I'd hoped for.

I started this book on Saturday...after 2 chapters I was ready to take it back to the library, but decided I should read further before making such a rash decision...few more chapters in and I've officially delivered right back to the library. This book was weird and it went a completely different d...

Although his writing can draw you out of the story at times, I did enjoy the story as a whole. His ideas are intriguing and makes your really wonder what his final idea was when writing the story. Is it really a ghost story? Is it just a journey of the main character, Winnie, through her grief and w...

Son of a Witch starts off slow and takes its time revealing the story. Liir is a very complex character with many hidden qualities that he doesn't even know. Warning though there is a brief mention of homosexual sex. Thankfully, Maguire was very figurative and didn't state the intercourse straight o...

Another good book that leaves an opening for another sequel. This did tie up lose ends for the Wicked Witch and gave a little more insight to Dorothy. I think we need the Wizard's point of view next.
