Excellent autobiographical novel about living in grimy poverty in 1920s Paris and London, emphasis on the grimy.

I was under the impression that was non-fiction/reportage but at that point in the book when the narrator is asked to write some political articles but claims he has no politicial opinions, I guessed it couldn't be Orwell. A memorable book. After many years, I still remember his stories about what goes on in the kitchens of fancy hotels/restaurants.
